THE STORM AND THE WHITE RAVEN

ADAM

Snow falls through the closed windows. It’s a storm that has been a few days coming and it seems to want to stay with us forever.

“Would you like some coffee?” asks Everett, coming toward me.

I nod and accept the cup, watching him march toward the table in the dining room where Nyx and Ivy are seated.

Less than three days ago, this home was a hive of movement, mutilated bodies, and sick, bleeding people lying on every surface while those who were in better condition tried to help them. I can’t deny many of them died. Some were so aberrantly wounded or changed that death would be the most merciful way out for them.

Those who survived regained their strength and left as soon as the leaders of the different races caught wind of what happened. In order to be found, Nyx had to lower the defenses of her own home and guide the caretakers of the wounded and rescued through the snowy roads to the small crowded dwelling.

Little by little the Children of Twilight had manifested themselves, weeping with joy or sadness at the discovery of their own, but, marching with relief at least not having to doubt whether their loved ones lived or suffered in a cell, prisoners of the hunters.

After an interminable time, everything went silent. Nyx appears weak but establishes the defenses of her home, although the plants have died and the snow falls indifferently on what was once a meadow surrounded by roses and fruit trees.

She looks exhausted. Thick dark circles under her eyes and her lips are cracked; her hands tremble and from her expression, I see she wants to sleep, but she can’t any more than any of us can.

Myself, and the rest of us, look no better, but with the growing concern over the present situation, we can do nothing but prepare for the worst by taking rash measures.

War has been declared and there is little else we can do but wait for it with open arms and claws, ready to fight.

“Your power derives from light,” Nyx says to Ivy, drawing everyone’s attention.

The fairy princess seems to choose her words well. After taking a sip of tea, Nyx says, “Fairies draw their powers from three principal sources: light, darkness, and twilight.”

“Just like witches,” adds Everett with a grimace.

I know my brother has never been a fan of witches, with whom we have a certain sworn feud. Outside of fairies, there are few things Everett detests more than witches.

Ironically, it is fairies and witches who have saved our asses. Including Ivy, whose powers have turned out to be more dormant than we thought.

“We fairies are the original owners of all magic, and in fact, ancient legends say that it was we who bestowed their gifts on all the other races,” Nyx tells us with a note of pride insinuated in her voice.

“It’s for sure that the fairies say that,” I comment between whispers as I sit down next to Everett and notice how he nods.
